@Torchthrower

While my original comment illustrates societal attitudes that are culturally bound,I still agree,in part at least, that humans intrinsically are attracted to 'a lot' of hair.

Only point of distinction that has to be made is if it's a lot of hair(leaving that intrinsic attraction open to all hair textures) or "lengthy" hair (meaning that intrinsic attraction is bound to only certain hair textures).
I would imagine that humans are innately drawn to a lot of hair, regardless of texture.
I believe more specified preferences like actual hair texture are culturally/socially bound.

Another thing I was thinking about is that ppl tend to gauge physical features in the context of what's valued most by their society.
Example:straight hair is valued most
Ppl gauge the value of their hair in context to how close it is to straight hair.

What if this was a black-dominated society? Ppl would be gauging the value of their hair in context to it's closeness to kinky hair.
Would 'a lot' of hair still be valued? Definitely, but not loose hair.

to Whatev,

i think by spiral hair you mean wavy or possibly like curly fries. BW would probably be more accepted. yes, femininity is defined by longer hair because it symbols good health of human females, excluding cutting it. it drives men wild; to me dark hair is the best in this case.

i believe these hairstyles are what u r talking of.

Ppl only admire kinky hair in theory.
They don't hold a true admiration for it like they would spiral hair or straight hair.
They only show love for kinky hair when they want to make a statement (ie wanting to seem more pro-black).
No one "dreams" about having kinky hair like they do spiral, wavy,or straight hair.

Question to viewers & Sarge alike:

Would black women be more accepted if they had spiral hair?
Has lengthy hair become(or even perhaps always been)THE defining point of femininity?

IMO,light skin was never truly the thing that separated black women, ultimately, from being able to compete with non-black women.Albeit, light skin was one way to do so,but the more "enabling" feature between having light skin & curly hair was curly hair.
Chilli from TLC is a perfect example of this. She could easily be as accepted as someone like Rihanna.

White people have no clue about black folks hair- none-at-all..zero. I remember when I wore my ginormous puff to work one day and I was discussing a case with one of my attendings and he actually stopped me mid-sentence and asked if my hair was real!!! It was hilarious. Actually most black people don't know anything about natural black hair. When I would wear my puff, black women would ask me if it was a piece. I've been natural or chemical-free if you will for 8 years (6 years as a loose nappy head and almost two years with locks). By far the best decision I ever made. My family hated it. Both my aunties wear weaves. my grandma is old school and grew up in alabama in the forties. she and my grandpa are college educated black folks and had to keep up a certain image. back then having a perm or straight hair was linked to class. so my mother and her sisters always had permed hair. It took me a long while even after I cut all my relaxer off to feel comfortable with my hair. I would get it blown out every week to wear it straight. over time I just didn't like straight hair on me and i just let my hair grow to monstruous form. then i just decided to lock it up. I agree with you though- we have to change it. white people are much more accepting of our hair when we show that we love it. this is true! i've experienced it.

This is how i wear my natural hair.

and let me tell you it seems that white people (especially white men) are fascinated with my hair. I get compliments from whites on a daily basis about my natural hair while on the other hand i only get weird looks from blacks. I work in an office that's about split 50/50 white and black, and when i decided to go natural 3 years ago, the negro's made comments like "i aint feelin it", "it's not professional" etc etc, but i the comments from whites were "i love it", "why don't more black girls wear thier hair that way", etc, etc. oh and pete white people DO know when a black woman is wearing a weave, hell they believe that every black woman with long straight hair has a weave, they can definitely tell.

some blacks can part their hair. no one ever discusses the different types of kinky hair. many blacks have different hair from each other. mines could be straight-ish (shaggy), crop wavy, curly depending on what i put in it.
