Nanotechnology will receive and is receiving a ton of funding across technologies. I would suggest looking there first. From nanites made of proteins that attack cancer cells or assisted healing on the medical side. Carbon nanotubing for extremely strong light weight engineering applications, to solar powered nanotech applications, I would predict the direction is here.
